How to use Adblock to download media files
So you’ve always visited sites with embedded media files, be it music or video or maybe an occasional flash game. You want to download it for future viewing and just because you’re a digital hoarder (like me, I know, it’s insane).
For the illustration below I have used Youtube as an example, but pretty much most of the sites that embed media files will work with this trick (I say most, don’t kill me for it)(*cough* try it on my box.net files *cough*).
Here’s how I go about it (click the images for larger version):
Step 1: Download and install the Adblock Plus Addon (if you haven’t already).
Step 2: Go to the site you want to download the embedded files from.
Step 3: Click the Adblock Plus button and select the file (usually under object sub-request). Right click the selected file and copy the item’s address.
Step 4: Open your download manager (I use DownThemAll!, but others will work), paste the item’s address and download away! (note: remove the noflv=1 if it’s from Youtube)
What to do with them files then? Use good ole’ VLC player to open it. For flash games, open in the browser of your choice. Now go and experiment with this trick.

Couldn’t get your idea to work. Here’s an example of an embedded video at Wired; using AdblockPlus, which file is it?

It seems Wired uses Brightcove with their videos. I’d assume this little trick wouldn’t work then.
A way to find the filepath to the flv file (Straker’s comment)
http://www.longtailvideo.com/support/forum/Setup-Problems/10356/Can-Brightcove-vids-be-viewed-using-JW-FLV-PLayer-
Would need to install another addon though.
Thanks for the reply. I checked out Straker’s comment, but honestly didn’t undertand the cryptic instruction where a script is needed (“Highlight the full URL and paste that into the script such as:
so.addVariable(‘file’,'http://brightcove.vo.llnwd.net/d5/unsecured/media/291742875/291742875_1517492244_28d”).
So I’ll use your idea for easy-to-get files, and for the hard stuff like Brightcove I’ll use a (primitive but effective) solution like Replay Video Capture, which I already have installed and does a good job of capturing videos as they play.
this is perfect for me… researching Ads for my projects!
However, how do you make these downloaded ad controllable? I’d like to step forward and backward through some of these and study the animations. Any tips on that?
If it’s a .gif I suppose you could load it into an image manipulation program that supports animated .gifs and study the frames. If it’s a .flv I’m not really sure, perhaps you could play it like a video and try that.
Awesome! Cheers man! You can use the FlashGot Mozilla Add-on for this kind of thing too.
